On 19th December 1909 Horace Allard married Emma Emilie Sussmilch. Emma was born on the 30th march, 1877, in Sydney, and was an extremely talented singer. She died on February 16, 1932, at ‘Olivano’, on the Appian Way, Burwood. Her obituary was as follows:

‘Mrs H.B. Allard (Miss Emma Sussmilch) who was well known in Sydney as a concert singer, died at Burwood on Tuesday. She was the daughter of Mr C. B. Sussmilch, formerly a leading musician of Sydney. She studied singing at the Berlin Conservatorium, and upon her return to Australia gained prominence as a singer and teacher, being particularly noted in Sydney for her accomplished interpretation of lieder. At different times she was soloist for the principal musical organisations, including the Philharmonic and Liedertafel societies, and she also gave many recitals. After her marriage in 1909 to Mr H. B. Allard she gave up her profession, but continued to sing in the cause of charity. Ill-health caused her retirement from a  public career three years ago. She is survived by Mr Allard and two daughters.’
