Horace Bately Allard



The Allard family in Australia originated in Norfolk, England. Two brothers came to Australia, the first being Horace Bately Allard, on S S Somersetshire in 1874, and the second, Francis John Allard on Garonne, in 1878. Also on this ship were the Woolnough family, including Maria C Woolnough who was aged 16 at the time, and was later to marry Horace Bately Allard. Maria had travelled with her family to England, and was returning to Australia.


Horace Bately Allard was born in Filby, Norfolk, England on 6th July, 1856. His parents were Francis Allard and Charlotte Bately, who were married in 1853 in Filby, Norfolk. He was one of 7 children.


Horace married Maria Cowlishaw Woolnough in Sydney on the 11th November, 1880. Maria was the daughter of George Woolnough, a Methodist minister, and Maria Cowlishaw. They had 4 children. After Maria's death, Horace married Emma Emilie Sussmilch in 1909. For more details go to H.B. Allard's Family.


Horace Bately Allard was a Chartered Accountant, some details of his career are  on the page, Horace Bately Allard. Horace Bately Allard and his wife Maria are buried at St Thomas Church of England, Enfield, Sydney. Emma is also buried at St Thomas'.


Francis John Allard, who has previously been incorrectly identified from records as Francis John Beaumont Allard, was born 24 August, 1857 in Filby. He married Alice Mary Case in 1889 in Sydney.
